Urban stream stewardship, learning from the Red Butte Creek spill

Three University of Utah faculty members are putting their research to work in our own backyard–quite literally.  Following the oil leak in Red Butte Creek this summer, professors Jim Ehleringer, William Johnson and Steve Burian joined forces to help the local community come to grips not only with the spill and its impacts, but its role in understanding and caring for urban streams and the spaces they traverse.   A six-week program of presentations by faculty and community leaders is underway on Thursdays at Rowland Hall.  But as the authors note, “the free public class is a first step.” Future courses for undergraduates and opportntities for public education are also on the horizon.  Read more about how these faculty members have taken an opportunity from the spill “to make lemonade out of lemons.”
