An oral history project – Texas in World War II – recounting the pivotal role Texans played in World War II has won national recognition for the Institute for Oral History at Baylor.

Among the recipients for the American Association for State and Local History Award of Merit are Dr. Stephen Sloan, director of the Institute for Oral History; Lois Myers, associate director; and Elinor Mazé, senior editor.

The AASLH Award of Merit is presented to recognize excellence for projects, educational programs, individual achievement and organizational general excellence in the collection, preservation and interpretation of state and local history throughout the United States, according to the American Association for State and Local History website.

The Texas in World War II Initiative was started Sept. 2, 2005, by the Texas Historical Commission to recount the role Texas played in World War II. The project began in Austin, Texas, but is a multi-year statewide effort.

“It was a very rewarding experience. We met so many enthusiastic volunteers across Texas, eager to help preserve these stories before they are lost, as the generation that can tell them passes away,” Elinor Mazé said.

Work the Institute for Oral History did for the project ranged from giving workshops around the state on oral history practices to interviewing World War II veterans and others who many have participated in war efforts on the home front.

Sloan, Myers and Mazé will be recognized Friday, Sept. 16, 2011, at a banquet supported by the History Channel during the 2011 AASLH Annual Meeting in Richmond, Va.
