Fifth-grader continues fight with leukemia

Jack Witherspoon, a fifth-grader at Riviera Elementary School in Torrance, was diagnosed for the third time with leukemia and is now undergoing treatment at Miller Children’s Hospital in Long Beach.

Jack has been fulfilling his dream of being a chef by holding fundraising events, which he calls “Cooking Up Dreams,” in order to raise money for cancer research. His philanthropic efforts have been featured on the “Tonight Show With Jay Leno” and “The Bonnie Hunt Show.”

Jack is giving day-to-day updates on his blog, which can be found on his website, www.chefjack witherspoon.com.

On Wednesday, he shared some good news: The hospital found numerous matches on potential bone marrow and stem cell donors.

“I feel good today, all the nurses are really nice here,” he wrote. “I think I’m going to dive into reading my new book, `Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume I.’ … Since I did my fifth-grade research project on Julia Child I find it especially interesting. It’s like reading a history book!”

Jack and his mother, Lisa, have co-written a cookbook named “Twist It Up,” to be released this fall.
