3 South Bay school districts on state’s list of financially troubled

Three South Bay school districts are included on a new California Department of Education list of districts facing severe financial problems.

Two of the local districts – Inglewood Unified and K-8 Lawndale – were on a comparable list released in March, but the K-8 Hawthorne school district is among the newest additions.

The list, released Friday by state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson, includes 143 school districts statewide. That’s 33 more than the March list.

The districts in jeopardy fall into two categories: those given “qualified certification,” meaning the state believes they may not be able to pay their bills over the next two years, and the more dire “negative certification,” meaning the state projects they will not meet their financial obligations in the current or next fiscal year.

Lawndale and Hawthorne are both among the 130 districts on the qualified list, as is the Los Angeles Unified School District. Inglewood is among the 13 on the negative list, and has been struggling all this year to avoid a state takeover.

There are about 1,000 school districts across California.
