University of Florida bats go live

The University of Florida boasts a different kind of Animal House – a Bat House.

It’s been there since 1991 and the bats’ nightly emergence is a popular spectator draw.

But now, the Florida Museum of Natural History has launched 24-hour streaming videos of the bat colony so you can watch the little fanged fliers from the safety of your own home.
And you may want to.
It seems that getting a bat entangled in your hair is the least of your problems – visitors are told to “beware of falling urine and guano as bats fly overhead.”

Happy Halloween viewing!

Stepping Into the Breach

Data breaches are going to happen, regardless of what an institution does. How effectively a school responds may be a more telling indicator of its preparedness. If you think your institution is immune to a security breach, perhaps you should have a chat with Brian Rust at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. When asked about data breaches on his campus, the communications director in the Office of the Chief Information Officer answers with the hint of a sigh: Let me tell you about the most recent one. This particular breach involved the Wiscard, a student ID that doubles as a debit card. There were records kept on a server that wasnt as secure as it should have been, Rust explains. But hes quick to point out UW-Madison is no more or less vulnerable than any other university. In fact, he believes that almost every school has suffered a breach or an exposure at some point.

Powell Elementary School closed early Friday after a nearby water main break left the school without water.

A six-inch main broke at 1125 Marlborough Road between Westchester and Remington roads, according to Raleigh officials. Utility workers cut off water service to 13 customers and Powell Elementary so they could repair the break.

The magnet school closed at 11:45 a.m.

Students were dismissed after teachers contacted parents individually.

Wake County school officials said the water main has been repaired and Powell will reopen on schedule Monday.

The devil show

Once I hear this sound I am hooked! This is more than a show. It is an obsession. “Law and Oder Special Victims Unit” has plagued my family for about six months.

The first one in my family to indulge in this powerful television show was my father. He is not one for “cop shows” as he calls them, but there was something addictive about this particular one.

He would watch them before work and would later rant about the intricate and surprising storylines. “You gotta see this!” he would tell me but I always brushed him off. A couple weeks later, passing the T.V. he was watching to get to the shower, I overheard the show.

I decided to go , just for a moment of course, and see what it was. He told me

When you think “skiing,” you probably think of the Alps or the Rockies. We are guessing that you don’t think of Evanston, Illinois, home of the Kellogg School of Management. Well, students may not do their skiing in Evanston proper, but a remarkable 700+ first- and second-year students participate in Kelloggs annual ski trip, which, according to students, is “the largest group ski booking in the country.” This student-run trip, organized by the Ski and Snowboard Club, has been held at Steamboat in Colorado, Whistler in British Columbia, Canada, and other top skiing locales. This years trip will be held December 10-16 at the Telluride Ski Resort in Telluride, Colorado, and one student even made a movie trailer for the trip, calling it a week not to be missed and showing clips from past trips. Indeed, sk
