Sept. 17, 2010

Since 1902, Baylor University has introduced its new presidents in public ceremonies. On Friday, Sept. 17, before a welcoming and celebratory crowd in the Ferrell Center, Baylor University Regents officially installed Kenneth Winston Starr, JD, as only the 14th president in the university’s storied 165-year history. The ceremony, which was held on Constitution Day, highlighted a week of academic, commemorative and community events relating to the inauguration and the United States Constitution.

Friday’s ceremony featured musical presentations from Baylor’s combined choirs, Symphony Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, the Inaugural Procession that included representatives from 119 learned societies and educational institutions, and addresses from keynote speaker Stephen L. Carter, The William Nelson Cromwell Professor of Law at Yale Law School, and Starr, who received Baylor’s traditional symbols of authority – the Presidential Medallion and Chain of Office – prior to delivering his inaugural response.

Three University of Utah faculty members are putting their research to work in our own backyard–quite literally.  Following the oil leak in Red Butte Creek this summer, professors Jim Ehleringer, William Johnson and Steve Burian joined forces to help the local community come to grips not only with the spill and its impacts, but its role in understanding and caring for urban streams and the spaces they traverse.   A six-week program of presentations by faculty and community leaders is underway on Thursdays at Rowland Hall.  But as the authors note, “the free public class is a first step.” Future courses for undergraduates and opportntities for public education are also on the horizon.  Read more about how these faculty members have taken an opportunity from the spill “to make lemonade out of lemons.”

You’ve grown up in Salt Lake City, attended elementary, middle and high school here.  This home, community and country are all you have known.  You feel as American as many of your peers.  But you cannot drive or work legally, and in many states, you cannot pursue higher education.  You live with the knowledge that you can easily be arrested and sent to another country, one that only lives in your vague memories and imagination.  You have limited choices for your future, just as you had limited choices in your past.  You did not have a choice when your parents brought you to this country as a child.

This reality exists for an estimated 2.1 million undocumented minors living in the United States.  It is a common perception that these individuals consist of only those who are of Latino/a descent. However,
